Champness Jack

BIO: After a storied career spanning 12 years as a physicist, 14 years at Bell Labs, and 16 years at Microsoft Research, Champness has traded the laboratory for the recording studio. His music is thoughtful and melodic, offering a multi-dimensional look at life – ranging from the witty (“Theoretical Physics“) to the profoundly empathetic (“Where Does It Begin“). It is often deeply personal:

 

•  The Wedding Gift: When asked to sing at his daughter’s wedding, Champness went a step further, writing and performing the original song “Lavender Wine.” The accompanying music video is a tribute to love in all its forms.

 

•  The “Magic” Lullabies: His track “Firefly Lullaby” became his daughter’s most-played song on Spotify in 2024 for its uncanny ability to help his grandson fall asleep. This success led to a custom re-writing of the classic “Hush Little Baby” at his daughter’s request.

 

•  Saying Goodbye: for his father’s funeral, his mother requested that he handle the music, and one piece he offered was his own “Lux Aeterna”. Later she suggested he do the same for her, so when that time came, he wrote “Dawn’s Break over the Malvern Hills”. These were such special opportunities to help say goodbye by weaving love of family and music.

 

•  Instrumentation: A multi-instrumentalist performing all vocals, guitars, and keyboards.

 

•  Production: Champness handles the full lifecycle of his art: writing, recording, producing, and mixing in his own studio, and all videography (see “The Birdbath” for an example of the latter).

 

•  Themes: His discography moves seamlessly from humor and scientific wit to poignant social commentary supporting global causes, like his tribute to the people of Ukraine.
